About this recipe

Easy vanilla and chocolate custard dessert recipe made with a biscuit base and topped with cocoa. This is the best cheat dessert and a breeze to make. It is just as easy as my cheat store-bought ingredient-only trifleNo baking is required. In fact, I use Cottees packet puddings. This dessert tastes even better the next day.

custard slice

  • 1 packet 250 grams Arnott’s Nice biscuits
  • 150 grams unsalted butter melted
  • 100 grams Cottees instant pudding vanilla
  • 100 grams Cottees instant pudding chocolate
  • 1.2 litre of milk
  • 500 ml thickened cream
  • cocoa to dust
  • vegetable oil spray

Notes from Rouba

  • I use Arnott’s Nice biscuits. To substitute, use Arnott’s Marie biscuits, digestive biscuits, or basically any vanilla flavoured biscuit.
  • Oiling the serving dish makes the crumble base easier to scoop and serve.
  • Double your recipe for a bigger gathering.

Step 1.

Spray the base of a 24 cm x 24 cm serving dish with vegetable oil. Process the biscuits until finely crushed. Add melted butter and mix well. Press the biscuit mixture gently into the base of the oiled serving dish.

Step 2.

Beat the instant vanilla pudding with 600 ml of milk with an electric beater for 1-2 minutes. Pour over the prepared biscuit base. Set in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Beat the instant chocolate pudding with the remaining 600 ml of milk with an electric beater for 1 minute. Layer over the chocolate pudding.

Step 3.

Whip cream with 2 tablespoons of icing sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread over the custard. Use the back of a spoon to create peaks within the cream. Dust with cocoa. This is the best Christmas dessert if you are time-poor!

This post is meant to be a recipe, but I can’t ignore what’s been happening 👉🏽👉🏽The last seven months have been incredibly challenging, watching thousands of innocent Palestinians being slaughtered in the name of self-defence 💔 It’s an excuse to ethnically cleanse the indigenous people of the land. But what I’ve seen in the last 24 hours has absolutely shattered me 😞

Families were told to move for their safety, only to be burnt alive. I forced myself to watch videos of beheaded babies—images that will never leave my mind. The destruction, the horrific scenes, and the screams are etched in our hearts and minds💔

And yet, our government responds with a mere, “It’s concerning.” Our tax money has contributed to the slaughter of these innocent people; our tax money has contributed to funding this genocide.

I feel heartbroken and helpless. How can the world just watch? How can anyone say, “I’m staying out of this”?

I’m not ok. Are you?

Seventy-five years ago, my husband’s grandfather and his family were evicted from their home. This history is a significant part of our lives 💔
