About this recipe

This Creamy Avocado Dip was the very first dip I learned to make outside my usual traditional ones —labneh and hummus. It’s fresh, zesty, and incredibly easy. My mother-in-law is famous for it, and once she showed me how simple it was, it became a regular part of our mezze table.

I love how quickly this Creamy Avocado Dip comes together. Just a few ingredients and a stick blender, and you’ve got something smooth, lemony, and perfect with flatbread or veggie sticks. I also use it in recipes like my Chunky Avocado Lime & Tomato Dip and my Avocado Prawn Cocktail Salad—it’s one of those recipes that just works with everything.

Notes from Rouba

  • Crush or mince the garlic for a smoother texture.
  • Use ripe avocados
  • If making ahead, add a little extra lemon to help preserve the colour.

Equipment I Used

For this dip, a simple handheld Bamix stick blender is all you need. It makes the creamiest result with barely any clean-up.

If you’re making a larger batch for a party or event, a good-quality bench-top blender will do the trick beautifully.

Method

Step 1. Prep the Avocados

Scoop the avocado flesh into a deep bowl or blender jug. Make sure they’re just ripe—not too firm, not overly soft

Step 2. Blend Until Smooth

Add the crushed or finely minced garlic, salt and lemon juice. Use a Bamix stick blender (or similar) to blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. Crushing or mincing the garlic before blending ensures there are no raw chunks in the final dip.

Step 3. Season to Taste

Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve immediately or squeeze lemon on top, cover with cling film pressed to the surface to keep the colour vibrant.

A Few Things You’ll Want to Know

Can I add a little heat?
Absolutely. A pinch of chilli flakes or finely chopped fresh chilli will give the dip a lovely kick without overpowering it.

What if I want a chunkier texture?
This is a smooth dip by nature, but you can absolutely mix in some finely diced veggies—think tomatoes, capsicum, or even spring onion—for a bit of colour and bite.

How do I stop it from browning?
The lemon juice helps, but if you're making it in advance, press cling film directly onto the surface and keep it chilled until serving.

Can I use lime instead of lemon?
Yes! Lime works beautifully—especially if you’re serving it with prawns or seafood dishes.
