Embrace your inner chef with our Ultimate DIY Beef Burger recipe, a favourite from our collection of hearty Aussie eats. This recipe proves that high-quality, homemade burgers can truly rival the best of any gourmet burger joint. The secret to an exceptional burger lies in the quality of the meat. That’s why I encourage exploring options beyond the pre-packaged mince. Did you know some family-run butchers sell Scotch fillet at an attractive price of just $24.99 a kilo? Mincing this cut elevates your burger to new heights of flavour.

Step 1.
Take your good quality ground beef and portion into round balls, roughly the same size. The size can vary depending on your preference for burger size.
Step 2.
Place a piece of baking paper both under and over each round ball of beef . Then, using the back of a plate, press down on each ball, smashing it into a flat patty. Ensure all patties are uniform in thickness for even cooking.
Season beef patties with salt and pepper
Step 3.
Heat up a frying pan over medium-high heat. Once heated, carefully add the beef patties. Cook each side for about 3-5 minutes or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
When the patties are almost done, place a slice of your preferred cheese on top of each one. Let the cheese melt slightly while the patties are still in the pan.
Once your patties are cooked to your liking and the cheese is melted, remove them from the pan. Let them rest for a few minutes while you prepare the buns.
Step 4.
Split the burger buns and lightly toast them, if desired.
Add the lettuce, sliced pickled cucumbers or gherkins, pickled turnips, followed by your cooked patty with the melted cheese. and a generous dollop of tomato, mayonnaise or chili sauce.
Place the top bun onto your assembled ingredients and gently press down.
